Scantime - Omron Registration Detection

The packaging material used in many packaging machines is very often delivered in rolls and has to be cut and positioned accurately. In order to avoid waste and errors and to compensate for environmental influences, a registration mark (usually black or in a colour that provides maximum contrast to the background) is added to the packaging material.

The goal of any mark sensor development is to reliably detect these registration marks even in changing environmental conditions. A particular challenge is the frequent exchange of packaging materials and the continuously changing packaging designs.

Scantime - Scantime Engineers Working on International Airport Automation Design project

Scantime as you may know, not only teach PLC & SCADA programming to individuals and company engineers worldwide, but we are also actively engaged in PLC, HMI, SCADA Design / Development and Trouble Shooting.

We are currently on Phase 2 of automating a 24MVA Power Generation system at an International Airport. The system comprises of 6 Generators, over 20 Breakers and Feeders, all of which are controlled by 29 PLCs communicating over an Industrial Network, along with 29 HMI Terminals. The Breakers and Feeders are each independently controlled by a PLC, which ensures that if automation is lost, then the Breaker and Feeder can still be operated manually, while its PLC ensures it operates within the safety limits for that zone of operation. Automation is controlled via a CCP - Central Control Panel PLC, which monitors the Public Power supplies from the 33KV Grid, and should the supplies be lost or fall outside the set Tolerances, then the Generators are automatically started, and all Breakers and Feeders automatically controlled.

Monitoring of the 33KV is done via transformers and Voltage Transducers, which covert the supply levels to 4-20mA signalling and then input to the PLC via A-D (Analogue to Digital) cards. The voltage transducers used were manufactured by FLEXCORE in the USA.

The complete PLC program for all PLCs is over 15,000 STEPS of Ladder Logic, while the CCP PLC is 3200 STEPS. There are over 100 alarms throughout the system, all being monitored by the CCP PLC. Standard programming techniques are employed, with a typical setup routine, Analogue Monitoring from the Voltage Transducers, Alarm Latches to ensure any brief alarm signal is captured and interlocked into the zone of operation within the programming.

One of the problems associated with such a design is "Testing & Commissioning", as this system controls power to an International Airport, switching OFF the Public Supply Power to the whole airport to test the Generator Backup is serious business, and so strict procedures have to be in place to ensure the interuption of power before backup takes control does not cause any accidents or major disruption to airport activity.

The CCP PLC program after it has been designed (over 3000 Steps) is then bench tested using simulators, however simulators do not tell you if the design is SAFE, or if their are hidden BUGS in the program, therefore the engineers have to be highly trained and capable of Reading PLC Programs and fully understand how the program works without simulation, this ensures they can identify any problems from their observations, and also work out any weaknesses in the program design.

The Airport engineers are to undertake 2weeks of training on the system in the next few months after trials are complete.

Scantime - Mitsubishi iQS Safety PLC

QS Safety PLC. In the past, production lines were protected by “islands” of safety control; typically dedicated safety relay panels. While safe, this approach suffered from many of the same disadvantages that lead to replacement of conventional relay panels many years ago. A safety relay panel is expensive to build, difficult to change and slow to troubleshoot. The QS offers a modern approach to safety by combining a CC-Link Safety distributed I/O network with the flexibility of a modular controller. This offers the capacity to cover an entire production line, while bringing the benefits of reduced wiring, rapid diagnostics and easy program modification and maintenance. Of course, since this is a safety controller however, there is a full complement of safeguards against system failure and unauthorized access. A SIL 3, Category 4 certification completes the picture.

Scantime - Device Is Able To Detect Single Cancer Cells In A Blood Sample...

A Harvard bioengineer and an MIT aeronautical engineer have created a new device that can detect single cancer cells in a blood sample.

The microfluidic device, described in the 17 March online edition of the journal Small, could allow doctors to quickly determine whether cancer has spread from its original site. It could also be used to detect viruses such as HIV.

It could eventually be developed into low-cost tests for doctors to use in developing countries where expensive diagnostic equipment is hard to come by, said Mehmet Toner, professor of biomedical engineering at Harvard Medical School.

The processing and packaging of food, beverage and pharmaceutical products is one of the application areas with the highest demands and most diverse requirements to sensors.

Observing high hygienic production standards and regulations is very important, when processing or handling fresh food.

But freshness and hygiene is not all. For consumers an appealing exterior and display is a key purchasing motivation. This requires special care when handling food that can be easily damaged or when damaged food needs to be identified during the handling.

To ensure cost competitiveness, automated high speed handling processes are standard in today‘s food production processes.

In leading this review, Weightman should reflect on the seeming inability of experts and authorities to allow for the type of worse-case scenarios now happening at the Fukushima facility.
